Rust on The100 right now: 1 group active in the last 30 days.
In Rust a clan is the people you share a base with: everyone on your in-game team, everyone authorized on the Tool Cupboard, everyone who knows the door codes. That arrangement lasts until the next wipe. Every server resets on a schedule, and on PC's forced wipe — the first Thursday of the month — every vanilla server starts over from a rock and a torch at once.
So Rust players look for a clan far more often than players of most games, and the useful question is not "which clan is best" but "who is playing my server, this wipe, during my hours".

| Crossplay |
Partly
PC Rust (Windows and Mac on Steam) and Rust Console Edition are separate games and never share servers. On console, each server is set to Crossplay, PlayStation only or Xbox only, so PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can play together on crossplay servers. |

| Cross-progression |
No
Rust Console Edition progress does not transfer between Xbox and PlayStation, and PC Rust is a separate purchase on Steam. |

Teams of 8 by default
The in-game team holds up to eight players by default. That is a team-UI cap, not a group limit: vanilla servers do not stop larger clans cooperating. Softcore servers cap teams at four, and many community servers enforce solo, duo, trio or quad limits. |

How to pick a Rust clan
Start with the server, not the clan. A group on a monthly-wipe server and a group on a weekly-wipe server are playing different games: a monthly wipe rewards a big base and steady upkeep over four weeks, while a weekly wipe is decided mostly in the first two days. The server browser tags every server with its wipe schedule (monthly, biweekly, weekly) and its style (vanilla, softcore, PvE, modded). Agree on those before you agree on anything else.
Then check the group limit. Vanilla servers do not cap how many people cooperate; the in-game team shows up to eight by default, and bigger clans simply run more than one team. Plenty of community servers enforce solo, duo, trio or quad limits instead, and Softcore servers cap teams at four. Those limits are enforced by the admins, not the game, so a clan of six is a liability on a trio server.
Then timezone. Bases are raided when nobody is online to defend them, and an offline raid is how a lot of wipes end early. A clan spread across timezones has someone awake for more of the day; five people who all log off at midnight Eastern need a base built to survive the night. Ask what hours people actually play, not how many members the clan has.
Finally, platform. PC Rust and Rust Console Edition are separate games on separate servers. Console clans on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can mix only on servers set to crossplay; PlayStation-only and Xbox-only servers are invisible to the other platform.
What a Rust clan does over one wipe
The first hours after wipe decide most of the month. A working clan splits the jobs: farmers run wood, stone and metal ore; a builder places the Tool Cupboard and lays out the base before anyone else claims the spot; one or two PvP players cover the farmers and contest monuments for components. Later someone becomes the electrician, wiring turrets and alarms, because a base that defends itself while you sleep is worth more than another wall.
Upkeep is the unglamorous job that keeps a clan alive. The Tool Cupboard holds the resources that stop the base decaying, and a base whose cupboard runs dry starts decaying from the outside in straight away. A clan that agrees who restocks it, and when, keeps its base through a week of real life.
On the last day, endgame events start — jets overhead, Bradley APCs on the roads — and most clans raid with everything they saved, since nothing survives the reset.
Trust, Tool Cupboard auth and the team UI
Rust's team system is deliberately simple. You create a team from the inventory screen and invite someone by standing next to them and pressing E. Teammates see each other on the map and share a team chat (Tab switches between global and team). Nothing in the game lets you recruit someone who is not standing in front of you.
Base access is separate from the team. Each player authorizes on the Tool Cupboard themselves, and anyone authorized can clear the entire auth list. Authorizing a stranger on wipe day hands them the base, so most clans auth new members only after a wipe or two together. Some console community servers limit cupboard and lock authorizations to the team size, which closes that gap by rule.
The official Rust+ app helps between sessions: team chat from your phone, a ping when a teammate logs in, and Smart Alarms that alert you when someone breaks in.
Where Rust players find clans
Each of the usual places is good at something different. A server's own Discord is the best place to recruit for that server, because everyone there already plays it. The official Rust Discord and the Rust Console Edition Discord are large and fast-moving — good for finding someone tonight, poor for finding the same people next month. Global chat on wipe day works, but it recruits strangers.
A group here is built for the part those miss: a roster that outlives one wipe. You post a session with a wipe-day start time and open slots, the people who show up join the group, and next wipe you start from a team rather than from global chat. A Discord bot can post the group's sessions straight to its Discord server.

Rust Clans — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find a clan in Rust?
Pick your server and wipe schedule first, then look for a group that plays it during your hours. The server's own Discord is the best source for that server; the official Rust Discord and clan finders like this one are better for groups that move between servers each wipe. Plan to play one wipe together before anyone gets Tool Cupboard access.
How many players can be in a Rust clan?
On vanilla servers there is no hard clan limit — the in-game team holds up to eight players by default, and larger clans run more than one team. Softcore servers cap teams at four. Many community servers set a stricter group limit (solo, duo, trio or quad) and their admins enforce it, so check the server's rules before you build a roster around it.
How do I join a team in Rust?
Someone on the team stands next to you and presses E to invite you, then you accept from your inventory screen. To start your own, open your inventory and use the create-team button at the bottom left. Joining a team does not give you access to the base — each player still has to authorize on the Tool Cupboard.
What is a group limit server in Rust?
It is a server, almost always community-run, that limits how many players may cooperate: solo, duo, trio or quad. The in-game team size is lowered to match, and admins enforce the rule against teaming through other means. If you want to play with exactly two friends, a trio server is where a three-person group is on an even footing.
Should I join a big Rust clan or a small group?
Join the size the server is built for. On a vanilla monthly server a larger clan can farm, build and keep someone online around the clock, which is what stops offline raids. On a duo, trio or quad server a big clan is against the rules, and a tight group that plays the same hours is the whole game.
